We liked Torquay so much we moved here

Hello,

We are Katie and Steve, the owners of Vane Tower Penthouse. We moved to Torquay in December 2017 after visiting the bay for the first time just three months earlier. When we walked along the South West Coast Path we were stunned by the beautiful coastline and Torquay’s microclimate was another lovely surprise. After leaving Kent on a grey, miserable day it was like suddenly being in the Mediterranean.

Back then we were at a crossroads in our life. Our three children had left home and Katie was recovering from heart surgery. We decided a complete change was needed and within three months we had sold our house in Tunbridge Wells and moved to Devon.

As luck would have it, Vane Tower, part of an Italian-style Victorian villa, was for sale. Steve’s former life was in design and build and he renovated the self-contained penthouse into a holiday apartment. Work was completed in December 2018 and we let out the apartment for the first time during 2019. We have had fabulous guests throughout the year and we look forward to welcoming many of them back as well as some new faces.

When we aren’t working, we can be found on our paddle boards or walking our dogs Alfie and Max. We are passionate about where we live and want our guests to enjoy this beautiful part of South Devon as much as we do. We hope to welcome you to stay with us soon.

Perfect for couples and families

The Penthouse is perfect for couples and families with children aged at least four and over as its architecture makes it unsuitable for people with limited mobility, young children and pets. Torquay is built on seven hills and Vane Tower is at the top of one of them. The amazing views at the top make the climb up more than worthwhile and we provide free off-street parking so there is the option to drive your car to the beach or town if you don’t want to walk. Our unique position means that, depending in which direction you head, you can be down by the bustling harbour, shops and restaurants, beaches or countryside within minutes. When you want to relax you can sit in the pretty courtyard garden or climb to the top of the tower and watch the yachts in the bay. If you love walking, the South West Coast Path is just at the bottom of the hill. The ferry service to Brixham is a short stroll away as is The Elephant, a Michelin starred restaurant. Whether you are looking for a relaxing break with friends, a romantic getaway for two or a family holiday, Vane Tower Penthouse is perfect.

Personal touches

We want your stay to feel like a home from home so we provide fresh flowers, some welcome goodies and basics including: kitchen roll, hand soap, washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets, a clean sponge and cloth, refuse bags, cling film and foil, salt and pepper, teabags, coffee, sugar and milk. We have a mini Nespresso machine and supply a starter pack of pods. In the shower rooms there are loo rolls, mini soaps and complimentary body wash and shampoo.

We also supply beach towels, beach mats, buckets and spades, a picnic rug and a disposable barbeque. There are two hairdryers, a Lava Brightsounds Bluetooth speaker and USB sockets.

If you want to do an online supermarket shop before you arrive, we offer a complimentary unpacking service. Just let us know when the shopping is coming on the morning of your arrival and we will unpack it for you. Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and Aldi all deliver here
