“Sunsets are my escape into the reality I want to continuously live” – Rachel Roy

Ι admit,  I am a sucker for sunsets. My husband teases me because every day, when the sun starts to set, I block everything out. And I pick up my camera. My phone camera to be exact. Nothing professional. No filters. No gimmicks. After all none are needed, nature does it all. Doesn’t it?

We have witnessed so many breathtaking sunsets at Ithaki House. Our guests always comment on the amazing views they experience. No matter how many, still I can never get enough of them. Εvery time is like the first time; I am always mesmerized. We enjoy a different sunset every day and every season. But I do believe that the best sunsets are during the winter. As the sun plays ‘hide and seek’ with the clouds, the light that comes through creates the most amazing, explosive scenery that simply takes my breath away every time!

You don’t need to be a romantic or a poet to appreciate the magic of each sunset. It is one of the most amazing things that we are blessed to have, for free, and can be appreciated every day. The awesome beauty of a setting sun is also symbolic of the beauty and mystery of life itself. The sunset symbolizes the completion of a day’s work and shows the passage of time. As the sun sets, it is time to end the day and take a break. Every sunrise and sunset we witness confirms that every day starts with possibility and opportunity, and every day ends with beauty and peace, regardless of what happened in between.

And…there is always a new tomorrow.

If you are anything like me, then you are always looking to catch a good sunset wherever you are. With the west coast of the island renowned for having the best sunsets, you’ve simply got to live the experience. So here is a list of places we propose you spend your 7 sunsets during your stay!

  1. Ithaki House

Ithaki is a place were you should take your time and savor each moment from the time you arrive. There is spectacular magic right on our doorstep, day or night. But the evenings are magic! Pour yourself a glass of wine, sit back and flirt with the nightfall as the sunset awaits to be unveiled during the most indulgent happy hour. www.ithakihouse.com

  1. Akamas Peninsula

Sunset at Akamas Cruise

Akamas is truly spectacular any time of day, with the dramatic rocky coastline dropping down to greet the deep blue of the Med. But once the hot Cyprus sun begins to disappear, photographer or not, be sure to have your camera with you: you’ll be kicking yourselves if you don’t capture the moment. Whether you are watching the sunset on a boat trip to the Blue Lagoon (https://www.facebook.com/alkionbluelagooncruises/, https://www.facebook.com/NAFSIKAII/, https://www.facebook.com/koullaboat/)  or during a meal at the Baths of Aphrodite Restaurant (https://www.facebook.com/aphroditesbaths/) or over a drink at the bar patio of the Anassa hotel (https://www.facebook.com/Anassa.Hotel/https://www.anassa.com/en-gb/bars/details/amorosa-lounge-and-terrace) , the setting becomes one that can only be described as heavenly.

  1. Peyia Sea Caves

Ship wreck Peyia

This dramatic spot right by the gorgeous ‘Oniro by the Sea’ still remains unknown. And it’s hardly surprising, given that it’s a little off the beaten track; off the main sea caves road and suddenly appearing after you’ve driven past fields of banana plantations. With the ‘Edro III’ commanding attention (stranded here since December 2011), coupled with spectacular sea caves and unobstructed sea views, the sunsets here are absolutely breathtaking. https://www.facebook.com/onirobythesea/

  1. Argaka Beach

Head a couple of kilometers out of Polis village towards Argaka and you’ll find the ‘Fly again Irish Pub & Grill’. Located on the scenic costal road of Argaka, right on the beach, serves delicious food, large selection of cocktails and memorable sunsets! https://www.facebook.com/flyagain/ & http://flyagainargaka.com

  1. Aphrodite’s Rock

Crowds from near and far flock to this infamous spot to catch a glimpse of the place where legend has it that Aphrodite, Ancient Greek Goddess of Love and Beauty, once rose from the frothy seas. As most people are already aware, the destination has now become the most mythical and famous on the island. And while the mighty rock and endless blue backdrop is pretty much picture postcard perfect during the day, nothing beats watching the sun dip below the horizon, with the sky in the area is often blessed with fiery crimson and orange hues.

  1. Lara Beach

Also situated in the last wilderness spot in Cyprus, in the Akamas Peninsula, Lara Bay is the nesting ground of the Green Back Turtle. Soft sand is in abundance in a bay that has the shape of a horseshoe.

  1. Troodos Peaks

Troodos Mountains

This might be an obvious one, but how often do you actually sit in peaceful isolation to take in the view from the highest heights of Cyprus? Blissfully quiet and absolutely magical, if you find just the right vantage point, it’s the perfect place to reconnect with your inner self and let all worries wash away. Enjoy the spectacle of the sunset here, and you’ll witness the mountain tops glisten, with the setting sun often forming a gradual gradient of colors while so gracefully lighting up the tips of the trees which blanket the dramatic mountaintops.

If you are visiting Aphrodite’s Rock, Lara Beach and the Troodos Peaks pack your picnic basket. Keep it simple, some fruits and your favorite wine, seize the moment and dream.

Afterall, “it is almost impossible to watch a sunset and not dream”
